A California data center firm has made a $3.6 billion buy -- including three operations in the Dallas area. Equinix Inc. said it is buying 29 data centers in 15 markets in the U.S. and Latin America.

The operations are being purchased from Verizon Communications Inc.

The Dallas-area data centers that are part of the deal are located in Irving and Richardson.

Equinix already has a half dozen data centers in Dallas located at the Infomart on Stemmons Freeway, in downtown Dallas on Bryan street and in Legacy business park in Plano.

The locations Equinix is buying from Verizon service 900 customers and have about 2.4 million square feet.

After the purchase is closed in mid 2017, Equinix will have 175 data centers around the world in 43 markets with 17 million square feet.

"This unique opportunity complements and extends Equinix's strategy to expand our global platform," CEO Steve Smith said in a statement. "It enables us to enhance cloud and network density to continue to attract enterprises, while expanding our presence in the Americas."
