Following in the footsteps of Facebook, Bebo, the UK's largest social network, has launched what it is calling the Open Application Platform. The system opens Bebo's programming interfaces to third-party developers so they can integrate their applications with Bebo.

At a launch event held in San Francisco on Wednesday, Bebo announced partnerships with more than 40 developers who have already created applications -- from music and movies to game-play and photo-sharing -- for the site's 40 million users worldwide.

"By opening up our application programming interfaces and establishing an open developer-friendly platform, we enable developers big and small to create entertaining, engaging applications for our global community -- providing another great way for Beboers to communicate, relate, and express themselves online," Michael Birch, CEO and cofounder of Bebo, said in a statement.

I'll Scratch Your Back...

The Bebo Open Application Platform will be the first in the industry to implement the standards defined by the Facebook Platform, a development system that allows companies and engineers to extend Facebook's more than 7,000 applications to other social Web sites.

Bebo's Open Application Platform will allow developers to generate revenue as they build applications for Bebo's international user base. Launch partners include NBA, The Gap, Yahoo, FashMatch, Webs.com, Bantr, Last.fm, MesmoTV, PokerSavvy, Jangl, PicksPal, Qloud, and Atomic Moguls.

"With Bebo's implementation of Facebook's open standards, developers can expand their reach, which will lead to even more application development, and ultimately benefit both Bebo users and Facebook users," Adam D'Angelo, CTO at Facebook, said in a statement.

Will Facebook Topple OpenSocial?

Analysts were initially skeptical that Google's OpenSocial could go toe to toe with Facebook's platform, and Bebo's choice to use Facebook adds ammunition to that argument. Bebo has more than 40 million users worldwide and ranks as the UK's most engaging Web site. Michael and Xochi Birch founded the site in 2005.

"In something of a surprise, Bebo's enthusiastic embrace and adoption of the Facebook platform may signal that that Facebook platform -- and not OpenSocial -- is the one that will become the standard," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. "There are already hundreds of applications for Facebook's platform that give it a considerable head start over OpenSocial."

Indeed, he said Bebo's Open Application Platform creates a new way for Beboers to discover and share applications. The Gap, for example, is working with Bebo to provide its members with an interactive application that allows them to cast themselves as Gap models.
