Review: Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router

Business travelers conducting sensitive transactions will be pleased to find that the Travel Router incorporates several security enhancements, including a firewall that uses Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) technology, which wards off intrusions by conducting a more-detailed review of data packets entering the network.


The Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router is designed to make it easy for multiple devices to share a single broadband connection. The router is targeted at people who want to share their access with friends and coworkers at hotels, airports, coffeehouses, and other broadband-enabled venues. The device also can function as a wireless home network Relevant Products/Services router or access point whenever it returns from the road.

Look and Feel

No bigger than your average mobile phone, the Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router measures 4.2 x 2.9 x 1.2 inches and tips the scales at 5.2 ounces. Slide the AC power Relevant Products/Services connector out from its case and the unit is ready to be plugged in to any wall socket.

An Ethernet port connects your wired PC. The Travel Router's compact, travel-friendly design features LEDs that display the connection status of both wired and wireless devices as well as any available broadband network. The router also ships with its own travel case.

Features

Compatible with both the Wireless-B and Wireless-G flavors of Wi-Fi, the Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router offers an Ethernet port that connects any laptop or desktop Relevant Products/Services PC that lacks onboard wireless capability. It also comes with the obligatory wide-area network (WAN) port for gaining access to broadband cable or DSL networks.

The device's browser-based set-up wizard makes it a snap to get the Travel Router up and running. Business travelers conducting sensitive transactions will be pleased to find several security features, including a firewall Relevant Products/Services that uses Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) technology, which wards off intrusions by conducting a more-detailed review of data Relevant Products/Services packets entering the network. Support for Virtual Private Networks (VPN) is also provided.

You can set up an access policy that either blocks or permits specific kinds of Internet usage and traffic. Moreover, the router can be set up so that it automatically logs all the Web traffic passing through the device.

Performance

The new Travel Router incorporates Linksys' SpeedBooster technology, which the company claims enhances wireless performance Relevant Products/Services by up to 35 percent over a standard Wireless-G connection. The device ships with the company's SecureEasySetup (SES) technology, which makes it a snap to establish secure Relevant Products/Services connections to computing Relevant Products/Services devices equipped with an SES-enabled wireless notebook adapter, such as the Linksys WPC54G.
