The Palm Treo 700p builds upon the success of its predecessors by adding hardware and software improvements that take performance to new levels. Achieving fast data speeds when operated on the EVDO networks of Sprint and Verizon, the Treo 700p not only can serve as a smartphone, but also can work as a high-speed wireless Internet connection for laptop PC users.
Look and Feel
The 700p comes in the same size (2.3 x 4.4 x 0.9 inches) and weight (6.4 ounces) as Palm's 650 and 700w models. The silver-and-charcoal handset sports a 2.5-inch color screen that is sharper and more vibrant than those of previous Treos. The Qwerty-style keypad provides increased tactile feedback.
Wisely, the 700p maintains many of the benefits that put Treo on the map. For example, the handset's expansion card slot and infrared port remain right where they ought to be: on the top side of the chassis.
Features
Under the hood, the Treo 700p integrates a speedy Intel mobile processor , 128 MB of RAM (of which 60 MB of nonvolatile memory is dedicated to the user's data-storage needs), an SD/SDIO memory-card slot, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth radio, USB and infrared ports, and a speakerphone.
Designed to run the Palm OS, the 700p features a faster version of the Blazer Web browser that integrates multimedia streaming capabilities. A native viewer for PDF files is also on board, together with access to AOL, Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo e-mail accounts. SMS and MMS messages are now threaded in a single chat view that makes it easier for users to conduct text-based communications .
When snapping photos with the phone, the onboard 1.3-megapixel sensor delivers solid imaging performance at a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 pixels, whereas video clips are captured at the lower resolution of 352 x 288 pixels.
The 700p ships with a stripped-down PocketTunes audio player for listening to favorite MP3 tracks. To play WMA files, however, users must upgrade to PocketTunes Deluxe ($24.95), which also delivers capabilities for accessing online music stores and streaming radio services.
The battery delivers a healthy 4.5 hours of talk time or an astounding 300 hours of operation in the standby mode. (continued...)
