Apple introduces new AirTag with major upgrades that significantly improve how users locate and recover everyday items. The latest generation of Apple’s popular item tracker delivers a longer connectivity range, more powerful Precision Finding, and a louder speaker, all while keeping the same compact design and familiar pricing.
Since its original launch in 2021, AirTag has become one of Apple’s most widely adopted accessories. Users across the globe rely on it to keep track of keys, wallets, backpacks, luggage, and other essentials. Now, Apple builds on that success by refining the core features that matter most: speed, accuracy, and ease of recovery.
Improved Precision Finding With Extended Range
At the heart of the updated AirTag is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This new chip dramatically enhances Precision Finding, allowing users to locate an AirTag from up to 50 percent farther away than before. Instead of searching blindly, users receive clear visual guidance, haptic feedback, and audible cues that lead them directly to their item.
In addition, Apple has upgraded the Bluetooth hardware to expand the detection range even further. As a result, nearby Apple devices can help identify the AirTag’s location from a greater distance, which proves especially useful in airports, offices, and large indoor spaces.
For the first time, users can also rely on their Apple Watch to find an AirTag. Supported Apple Watch models now offer Precision Finding directly from the wrist, allowing users to track items quickly without reaching for their iPhone. Consequently, the AirTag experience becomes more seamless across Apple’s ecosystem.
Beyond range improvements, Apple redesigned the internal speaker to make it significantly louder. The new AirTag produces sound that is 50 percent louder than the previous generation and can be heard from up to twice the distance.
This change directly improves real-world usability. For example, users can now hear an AirTag buried under couch cushions, hidden inside a backpack, or tucked into a suitcase more easily. Moreover, Apple introduced a new, distinctive chime that helps users recognize the sound instantly, even in noisy environments.
Another key improvement is deeper integration with the Share Item Location feature in iOS. This allows users to temporarily share an AirTag’s location with trusted third parties, such as airline customer service teams, making it easier to recover misplaced items.
Apple has partnered with more than 50 airlines to support this feature. According to SITA, airlines using shared location data have reduced baggage delays by 26 percent and cut permanently lost luggage by up to 90 percent. Access remains secure, limited to authorized staff, can be stopped at any time, and automatically expires after seven days.
Built-In Safety and Anti-Tracking Protections
Apple introduces new AirTag with strong safeguards to prevent misuse. The device includes industry-leading protections against unwanted tracking, such as cross-platform alerts and Bluetooth identifiers that change frequently.
If someone detects an unknown AirTag moving with them, their device alerts them automatically and provides instructions to locate or disable it. By taking this proactive approach, Apple reinforces that AirTag is designed strictly for tracking objects, not people or pets.
Environmentally Responsible Design
In line with Apple’s environmental goals, the new AirTag features 85 percent recycled plastic in its enclosure and 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets. Apple also uses recycled gold plating in its circuit boards and fully fiber-based packaging that users can easily recycle.
Despite these internal changes, Apple kept the same external form factor. Therefore, the new AirTag remains compatible with all existing AirTag accessories, including the FineWoven Key Ring, which itself contains 68 percent recycled content.
Pricing and Availability
Apple introduces new AirTag without changing its pricing. The device is available for $29 for a single AirTag or $99 for a four-pack, with free personalized engraving offered through Apple’s website and the Apple Store app.
Overall, the updated AirTag delivers meaningful improvements that enhance everyday usability. With longer range, louder audio, deeper Find My integration, and continued privacy protections, Apple strengthens its position in the item-tracking space while keeping the experience simple and familiar for users.
